Jake and Dinos Chapman are best known for their work based on the ‘Disasters of War’ etchings by Goya. They produce controversial and disturbing work which is portrayed mainly in sculpture.
The first time I saw their work ‘Disasters of War’ diorama sculpture I did not know much about it. At first I didn’t like the sculpture but I appreciated the amount of work and attention to detail that had gone into it. Once I had found out the reasoning behind the piece and what it represents, I began to like it because it shows truth in the subject of war. Their work questions modern politics, religion and morality. “The work ‘Disasters of War’ addresses society’s morbid fascination with images of death and war. These works reflect the detachment of western societies from the realities of war-time killing, both through computer technology (which aids and sanitises war itself) and the comfortable spectatorship provided by television and film.”
